TIL my cat really REALLY likes crackers
Q:I'm a college senior applying to grad school now. What are classes like? Are they really different than college classes?
Well, I can tell you what it’s like to be a first-year grad student within my department. This is what most of my classes are like: each week, we read a book and a couple of related articles, and then have to write a ~1,000 word analysis on them. We also have a research paper that we’re working on for the end of the semester. Class meetings are seminar-style, with the prof leading the class for half of that time, and a student leading the second half.
Is it different from college? Yes. I have much more to read and write. That said, because our classes are so small (6-10 people), and because our prof considers us to be semi-peers, I find class meetings nicer and more informal. I’m not saying that they’re easy, but that the discussion feels more conversational and less lecture-y. Also, unlike in college, there’s a lot more flexibility in terms of deadlines and reading lists.
